The Ultimate Cuban Sandwich with a Heritage Twis

The Cuban sandwich—or Cubano—is a masterpiece of layering. Traditionally made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, it is pressed until the bread is shatter-crisp and the cheese is molten.

While pickles usually provide the necessary acidity, swapping them (or supplementing them) with a sweet and tangy pepper relish adds a layer of complexity that standard dill chips simply can't match. This recipe uses a heritage-style pepper relish to bring a subtle heat and a deep, vinegary punch to the party.

Ingredients

  • Cuban Bread: A long, white water bread loaf. If you can't find authentic Cuban bread, a soft French or Italian loaf works well.

  • Mojo Roasted Pork: Thinly sliced.

  • Glazed Ham: Deli-style or honey-roasted, thinly sliced.

  • Swiss Cheese: High-quality slices for that perfect melt.

  • Nanny Dot’s Pepper Relish: The "secret ingredient" that replaces or elevates the traditional pickle layer.

  • Yellow Mustard: Classic and sharp.

  • Butter: Salted, for pressing the bread.

Instructions

1. Prep the Bread Slice the bread into roughly 6-to-8-inch lengths, then slice those pieces in half lengthwise. Spread a generous layer of yellow mustard on the top half and a thick layer of pepper relish on the bottom half.

2. Layer the Meats and Cheese On the bottom half (over the relish), layer the Swiss cheese, followed by the ham, and then the roasted pork. Placing the cheese next to the bread helps it melt faster and acts as a delicious "glue" for the sandwich.

3. The Press Close the sandwich and generously butter the top and bottom of the crust.

Pro Tip: If you don't have a panini press or a plancha, use a heavy cast-iron skillet. Place the sandwich in a warm pan and weight it down with another heavy skillet or a brick wrapped in foil.

4. Toast to Perfection Press the sandwich over medium heat for about 3–4 minutes per side. You are looking for a golden-brown, crispy exterior and a compressed, warm center where the flavors have melded together.

5. Serve Slice diagonally and serve immediately. The contrast between the savory pork and the bright, vinegary crunch of the pepper relish makes this version of the Cubano absolutely addictive.

Why the Pepper Relish Works

Traditional Cuban sandwiches rely on pickles for "brightness." By using a heritage pepper relish, you introduce a more nuanced flavor profile—balancing the sweetness of the peppers with the sharp tang of the brine. It turns a standard lunch into a gourmet experience that honors old-school recipes while embracing bold flavor.
